The issue that started tonight between John Cena and C.M. Punk has my curiosity. I think that these two will have some stellar bouts when they finally wrestle. Punk is very hungry to re-establish himself as a dominate, singles performer. Punk and Cena can also carry the verbal load of this main event level issue.

I thought that CM Punk did well for his second night on the job especially considering the magnitude of the main event Monday night that Punk was left to handle alone at crunch time. Doing live commentary on a broadcast like Raw isn’t an easy assignment particularly for someone with little experience. Punk adds a unique element to the broadcast which is always a positive. I’m happy for the Chicago native and enjoy his wit.

Yes…I do feel that CM Punk has the potential to become an entertaining and informative color analyst on WWE TV. The key is going to be for Punk to put in the same amount of effort into becoming a skilled broadcaster that he did in becoming a wrestler. We saw Punk evolve from beginner to Indy star to World Champion in WWE. It is arguably easier for a beginning broadcaster to become proficient in a two man booth as opposed to a three man booth but it can be done.

Happy Birthday, CM Punk!

Posted 9 hrs ago by Kyle Anderson in Music

The members of the MTV Newsroom are enthusiastic about a number of different entertainment avenues. Music, obviously, tops that list. Movies are right up there, of course. Sports are important, as are art galleries and theatrical performances. And then there are also a handful of us who quite enjoy professional wrestling. That’s why we couldn’t let the day go by without wishing CM Punk, one of the best performers currently working on the WWE circuit, an extremely happy birthday. The man born Phillip Brooks turns 32 years old today.

Punk is notable for a number of reasons. He doesn’t have a traditional professional wrestling look (he is obviously in good shape but would never be mistaken for a professional bodybuilder the way stars like John Cena or Triple H might) and has a totally unique character (he is straight edge, a lifestyle he actually subscribes to in real life). Despite all the piercings, tattoos and crazy hair choices, Punk has managed to ascend to the top of the heap both within the WWE (he has been a world champion four times) and among wrestling fans (he won 2009 Best Feud of the Year in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter). He has had some of the most incredible matches of the modern era, including an incredible series of matches with Samoa Joe in Ring of Honor, a pair of victories in Money in the Bank encounters and a nutty TLC match with Jeff Hardy.

Punk has often talked about his love for music (MTV News’ own Kyle Anderson actually interviewed him for a story about music in Spin magazine a few years ago), and his taste runs pretty (his entrance music is by Killswitch Engage). He also said that the first band he ever got totally obsessed over was Rancid, which is why we celebrate his birthday with a little “Ruby Soho.”

Gallows sees SummerSlam as an opportunity
By GREG OLIVER – Producer, SLAM! Wrestling

Luke Gallows has a warning for The Big Show — The Straight Edge Society is "psyched" for SummerSlam, and can’t wait to inflict further pain. But for him personally, it might just be the most high-profile match he’s had for WWE, in a career that has seen him under four different guises.

(Wait, maybe you don’t remember that Gallows was briefly the Freakin’ Deacon? That he was the Imposter Kane when See No Evil hit theatres? And that, many pounds ago, he was Festus?)

"I’m looking forward to getting the chance to get in there with Big Show three-on-one. Like you said, the match has been highlighted and promoted and stuff like that, which is definitely a big up for me as a whole," Gallows told SLAM! Wrestling from his home outside Atlanta on Thursday. "The whole Straight Edge Society has helped my career take off a little bit. So I’m thankful for that."

CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society, comprised of Gallows, Serena (Serena Deeb of indy fame), and the recently-unmasked Joey Mercury, have dominated the Smackdown show for quite some time now. The Big Show, who arrived on the Friday night show following the post-WrestleMania draft, has had issues with SES.

Gallows admits that taking on Big Show, even three-on-one, is, well, a big task.

"You can’t explain how big the man is until you see him, and it’s driven home more when you’re in the ring with him, when you feel somebody with that kind of power," he confessed. "I remember being in the ring with him a couple of years ago, and jumping off the ropes — at the time, I was over 300 pounds myself. He caught me like a baby, like I pick my own son up."

But there is strength in numbers, he assured.

"The thing that’s in our corner is that there are three of us, and there’s one of him. And I know that we’ve done damage to that hand, legit. I don’t know if you saw on TV, but Serena’s heel digging into that thing was nasty. Hopefully we’re ready for him come this Sunday because I’m super psyched up for SummerSlam."

Big Show makes big impression – Giant WWE superstar offers wide range of talents
BY JIM VARSALLONE

It doesn’t take much for Paul Wight to make an impression. When you’re 7-0 and 480 pounds, not much is needed, even though he does offer so much more.

He is a Big Show, hence the name, and he is one of the top superstars on the WWE roster. Commercials, television shows, music videos, game shows, movies, sports entertaining, Big Show does it all.

So, Sunday, Aug. 15 on one of WWE’s biggest stages, Big Show will battle The Straight Edge Society (CM Punk, Luke Gallows, Joey Mercury) with Serena in a 3-on-1 handicap match during the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view.

Just which side is handicapped?

"The best way to get rid of a snake is to cut the head off," Big Show said. "So I got all three members of the SES, and I’m going to go at it."

The show starts 8 p.m. EST from the Staples Center, home of the world champion Los Angeles Lakers.

What do you think of the Straight Edge Society?

"I appreciate the overall message they try to send. There’s nothing wrong with living a clean life and abstaining from a lot of things that can have a bad influence on you," Big Show said. "However, the Charles Manson, L. Ron Hubbard way that CM Punk tries to present it is a little bit too much for me."

Is CM Punk a knucklehead.

"No. CM Punk is not a knucklehead," Big Show chuckled. "Actually, a knucklehead is someone who is sweet, has a heart, makes mistakes with the best intentions and tries to come through and do the right thing.

"CM Punk is definitely not a knucklehead. CM Punk is a Straight Edge Society jerk, which is probably a polite way to put that. A jerk, yea, that will work."

Reckless diving
By: Ryan Murphy
Written: July 31, 2010

Few Superstars defined the term "high risk" like Jeff Hardy. A true daredevil in the ring, the former WWE Champion was all too willing to use his body like a weapon no matter what the cost. This “live for the moment” mentality was on full display at SummerSlam 2009 – the No. 5 moment on WWE.com’s "Great Leaps of Faith."

Defending his World Heavyweight Championship in the bout he made famous, The Charismatic Enigma took on CM Punk in an absolutely harrowing Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match. Leading up to the contest, The Straight Edge Savior repeatedly belittled Hardy’s unique way of life, bringing out a rage in the eccentric Superstar that he unleashed on Punk in this grueling battle.

After a vicious back-and-forth war that saw each man pushed to their breaking point, the match fell to the outside of the ring, where Hardy dropped Punk on an announce table. The Charismatic Enigma then scaled a 30-foot ladder and hurled his body from the very top of the structure, recklessly driving all 225 pounds of himself onto The Straight Edge Savior. The brutal impact of flesh and bone crashing through solid wood echoed throughout the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, shocking the capacity crowd in attendance.

Although he competed in many TLC Matches, this was arguably Hardy’s most breathtaking dive, and he felt every bit of the crash. Bruised and broken under busted monitors and wooden shrapnel, the extreme Superstar was unable to get up — a victim of the “live for the moment” motto he followed. As EMTs tended to the injured Hardy, Punk slithered his way into the ring and climbed the ladder toward the World Heavyweight Championship. Hardy made one last attempt to halt The Straight Edge Superstar, but he was simply too battered to do so.

In the end, the high-risk maneuver would cost Jeff Hardy his title. However, the unique individual was always more willing to take the leap than worry about the fall.

Mike sent word that WWE ring announcer Tony Chimel announced CM Punk as hailing from the "Stanley Cup Champion and greatest hockey town in the world Chicago" at the SmackDown live event on Saturday night. Chimel was forced to do this after losing a bet on the Stanley Cup with Punk.

We reported before the Stanley Cup Finals that CM Punk had made a bet with Smackdown announcer Tony Chimel. Following last night’s Chicago Blackhawks Cup win, it appears as if Punk has won the bet. Therefore, according to reports, Chimel will have to announce that Punk hails from the "home of the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks." It remains to be seen whether or not Chimel will have to do this at a TV taping or at a house show event, but we’ll let you know if we receive any reports.

Here’s a follow-up on the interview that the Chicago Tribune recently conducted with CM Punk:

Just letting you know that we revealed details of the Tony Chimel / CM Punk NHL Stanley Cup bet on “Right After Wrestling” last night.

The bet is that if the Hawks win the Stanley Cup, Tony Chimel has to announce CM Punk hailing from “The home of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago IL” and if Philly wins the Stanley Cup then CM Punk has to cut a promo where he says “this city is not nearly as good as Philadelphia”.
