Survivor Series 2011 will always be remembered as the night that The Rock returned to the ring, put “boots to asses” and proved that after seven years, he’s still got it.
However, another WWE Legend received a huge ovation from the WWE Universe inside Madison Square Garden, a surprise return that reminded the sold-out MSG crowd and millions watching around the world that WWE’s November annual is truly rich in tradition and history. As a counter to Alberto Del Rio’s personal ring announcer, CM Punk revealed his own ring announcer for the evening: WWE Hall of Famer Howard Finkel.

Hearing the legendary announcer introduce “The Voice of the Voiceless,” and anoint CM Punk as the “NEWWWW” WWE Champion at Survivor Series was not only an honor for Punk, but a welcome treat for our longtime fans.
CM Punk talks Rock, Austin, ‘WWE 12′
By Jon Robinson | 23 Nov 11
CM Punk is an action figure, a video game character, and WWE champion.
He’s also the most controversial and debated wrestling personality since Steve Austin gave Mike Tyson the finger.
But a few months ago, he was ready to give up this superstar lifestyle, go home, and try to live the life of the anonymous, a life he hasn’t known in over a decade.
"This wasn’t a contract negotiation. I wasn’t playing hardball or holding out for more money or anything like that," Punk tells me as we meet in Manhattan just days before he won the WWE Championship inside Madison Square Garden, a win he celebrated by stage-diving into the first row, caught by his chant-happy fans.
"I had 100-percent made up my mind that I was leaving," says Punk. "I was just burnt out and I wanted to go home and chill out. I have never had a break. I’ve never had time off, ever, and I’ve been doing this since 1997. I’ve never taken time off for anything, and the way I figured it, the door was always open for me to come back. So I wasn’t going to wrestle anywhere else, I just wanted to go home and do nothing and see what that was like for a while."
But that time out from the squared-circle never happened, as the buzz and hype surrounding Punk and what could’ve been his last match turned the "Chicago Made" wrestler into the sport’s latest cult hero thanks to a promo that exploded with pipe bomb intensity, delivered with such passion and authenticity, it left even the most faithful followers of professional wrestling’s male soap opera wondering if this was all part of the script or Punk’s way of burning every last bridge before he left the business.
WWE’s biggest draw, CM Punk, chats with us about his championship match at Survivor Series, special surprises, and being praised by legends.

WWE Champion CM Punk mouthed off to John Laurinaitis
Still reeling after winning the WWE Title in Madison Square Garden at Survivor Series, WWE Champion CM Punk promised the WWE faithful in Hershey, Pennsylvania that he would make things interesting on WWE Raw SuperShow again. His first goal? To put Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis on the unemployment line.
The WWE Universe may have liked the sound of that, but Mr. Laurinaitis was quick to squash their applause. Entering to tell the new WWE Champion that he believes they can work together, the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations promised that he was more radical than one might expect and then proved his unpredictability by scheduling Punk in two bouts — a rematch against Alberto Del Rio next Monday and a showdown with United States Champion Dolph Ziggler tonight.
WWE Champion CM Punk def. United States Champion Dolph Ziggler in a Title-free Match
Their championships may not have been at stake in this match, but both new WWE Champion CM Punk and United States Champion Dolph Ziggler certainly fought like they were. Convinced that he was, in fact, the new face of WWE, the United States Title holder looked to knock Punk off his perch early, but The Straight Edge Superstar wasn’t going down that easy. Catching the bleached blond off guard, the WWE Champion scored with a devastating GTS to secure a thrilling victory.
