WWE hits the Cajundome

When you think of a wrestling champ, you might conjure an image of Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Or rather, you might imagine an extremely muscular, American-hero type who seems to be the good guy whenever he steps in the ring.

CM Punk is not your typical WWE wrestling champ.

The Chicago-born modern wrestling star has tattoos wrapping his arms. Across his stomach is another tattoo, declaring the wrestler "straight-edge."

Yet, he has wanted to a professional wrestler since he was young when he was looking up to former stars such as Rowdy Roddy Piper and Shawn Michaels.

"I always saw myself as a wrestling superstar," Punk said. "If I got fired today, I would still be a wrestler tomorrow. I’d probably be wrestling extensively in Japan. I’m not somebody who failed at football and just tried wrestling."

He seemingly has come out of nowhere to take the WWE world by storm, and everyone except for him is mad about it. Every time you tune in to a match, it’s like WWE ringleader and CEO Vince McMahon, Triple H and John Cena constantly are baiting Punk with trash talk.

"I just don’t think I am what they think is what a wrestler should act like, look like or be," Punk said. "I have a chip on my shoulder. I speak my mind. They’re not in love with that. They want somebody who falls in line and talks about how great the WWE is."

Alberto Del Rio def. John Cena and CM Punk in a Triple Threat Hell in a Cell Match (New WWE Champion)

NEW ORLEANS – Destiny (and chaos) once again smiled on Alberto Del Rio, who ventured into “Hell” for the first time this Sunday and attained his second WWE Championship. The Mexican Aristocrat overcame both CM Punk and defending titleholder John Cena in an epic Triple Threat Hell in a Cell encounter, but his monumental triumph inside Satan’s Structure was arguably eclipsed not only by the controversial circumstances of his victory but by the frenzied aftermath of the match itself.

All three these competitors put forth an impressive effort as they vied for WWE’s grandest prize in the most barbaric of environments, but it was The Mexican Aristocrat who emerged from this career-threatening encounter with the WWE Championship after nailing Punk with a steel pipe. However, none of these battle-tested ring warriors anticipated the brutality that former WWE Superstars The Miz and R-Truth had in store for each of them and the entire WWE Universe after the bout.

CM PUNK

The Straight Edge Savior may have defeated Alberto Del Rio on Raw, but The Mexican Aristocrat battered him with a steel chair after the bout. Will Punk still be feeling the attack when he enters the Hell in a Cell?

Earlier this week, a WWE.com article ordained Alberto Del Rio as the favorite for this Sunday’s first-ever Triple Threat Hell in a Cell Match, citing The Mexican Aristocrat’s sheer cunning as the reason. (FULL STORY)

Del Rio’s two opponents, WWE Champion John Cena and former champion CM Punk, beg to differ.

“I think you reporters are quite ill-informed. I’m actually quite cunning, and so is CM Punk,” retorted the reigning WWE Champ.

Expanding on the Hell in a Cell comments that he made in a WWE.com exclusive video, The Second City Saint emphatically shot down the notion as well – questioning whether WWE.com has actually been watching WWE programming. “[Del Rio’s] not the most cunning of the three of us, and he sure doesn’t have the advantage,” he said.

Both Superstars were quick to point out Del Rio’s lack of experience inside Satan’s Structure, whereas each Cena and Punk have each experienced firsthand the caustic chaos that is Hell in a Cell. Then again, they also lost their first forays into Hell against Randy Orton and The Undertaker, respectively. And despite Del Rio’s brutal actions this past Monday on the Raw SuperShow, Punk wouldn’t waver in his observation.

“He’s never been in the Cell,” he repeated, “and he’s not going to have his announcer, Ricardo [Rodriguez], in there with him.”

Interestingly, neither Punk nor Cena stated that either of them held the advantage over the other going into Sunday’s showdown. The only thing Cena would admit was to feeling at a disadvantage entering The Devil’s Playground as the reigning WWE Champion.

“There are a lot of positives about being a challenger, but not many positives about being the champion any time you’re in in a Triple Threat Match,” Cena observed. “The fact that this Sunday will be the first-ever Triple Threat Match inside Hell in a Cell certainly adds to the uncertainty awaiting us in the ring. The truth is, no one knows how this kind of match will play out within the restricting walls of the Cell; it eliminates any possibility of determining a favorite for Sunday night.”

WWE Champion John Cena def. Christian by Disqualification; Alberto Del Rio attacked The Champ

A lot of things have happened inside the callous confines of Hell in a Cell, but the WWE Universe has never witnessed a Triple Threat Match waged inside The Devil’s Playground. Despite the horrors that surely await him, WWE Champion John Cena had an air of confidence about him as he addressed the WWE Universe about his collision with Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk just six days later.

Cena locked up with Christian in a non-title showdown, but it was the verbal sparring between The Mexican Aristocrat and The Second City Savior on commentary that really enthralled our fans watching the action from home. The ringside confrontation got physical when Del Rio assaulted Punk, then attacked Cena with an enziguri, resulting in Christian’s disqualification. Will Del Rio’s destiny be reclaimed at Hell in a Cell?
